ADHD - Sensory Overload! A tip to help you finish what you're reading online

By John P. Thursday, August 04, 2011

The Internet can be a deathtrap of wasting time for people with ADHD. By design, the Internet is supposed to put all the information of the world at your fingertips.

This technology allows us to discover things we might otherwise never find on our own.

If you're reading an article about a soccer match and an ad for some soccer cleats is on said article it shouldn't surprise you.

The Problem:
For someone with ADHD this setup encourages time-wasting and procrastination.

If you're leisure reading, by all means indulge yourself. Read away and follow the white rabbit down whatever hole he leads you to.

But if you're looking to concentrate on an article -- maybe an article by one of the leading ADHD contributors on Health Central, Eileen Bailey -- or you're just taking a quick break, all of the ads, links, related stories, pictures, font choices, background color schemes, user communities, or discussion boards can weigh down your reading experience.

Or you may not even read the article (but you found an awesome soccer ball on eBay for fifty cents!).

The Solution:
A solution suggested to me after I commented on an article here on Health Central was that I should print out the article, which can cut back on the distractions. I take it a step further actually; I use a website, Print Friendly, to further cut back the distractions.

With Print Friendly, you just paste a link into the box then hit "Print Preview" and it gives you an ad-free, printable version of the page. You can turn it into a PDF or print it straight to your printer.

Print Friendly even has tools that allow you to put a button within your web browser so you can do this without navigating away from your page.

So for your next short coffee break, if you worry about spending too much time or becoming distracted while leisure reading, print it out. Once you're done reading recycle the paper and get back to work.

We all know how important it is that we stay on task, at least most of the time.

Thanks for your input. You don't actually even need another program, hitting the "Print" button above each article will give you an ad free version of the article, ready to print out, and you can then print to a PDF. If you are like me and have a Kindle (or I imagine, any of the electronic readers, etc) you can send the PDF to it so you can read it later).
