Q: adhd .. medciation

hi my 9yr old son was diagnoised with ADHD.  the dr asked me several questions and the spoke to the school. based upon all the question she said he has ADHD..

Is that correct way off making a diagnoise?

she recommended Retolin.. 10mg... and what i would like to know is how long does ADHD last in children... and will it have affect in his growth?

Im worried i have only one child and hes not doing so well at school, i only agreed with medciation so that it will help him to concentrete better.. but in the long run will he do well at school with medication?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I know this is probably a time when you have more questions than you do answers. There is a lot of information on this site to help you understand ADHD and to learn how you can help your son.

As far as diagnosing ADHD, there is no test that will determine whether someone has ADHD. The normal diagnostic process includes parents/caregivers/teachers answering questions about medical and developmental history as well as current behaviors. Once this information is obtained, a doctor determines if ADHD is present.

More information about the diagnostic process:

Medication is one part of treatment, behavior modification is another. A combination of both is usually recommended.
