Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Marja' asks

Q: what is a migraine medicine that does not make you depressed or tired?

I have been in and out of the doctor approx. 6 or 7 times in the past year for DAILY headaches and crucial migraines. Well my doctor prescribed me Topamax about 2 months ago, thinking MAYBE he really thought this would work for me. I have had severe depression, difficulty performing on exams in college this summer(and thats not normal- i study A LOT) and so tired that I cannot get out of the bed in the morning. I feel that my doctor is just throwing medications at me just to get him out of his hair, but im 23 years of age, and I am living with this condition that I dont even know an answer to. I just want to find an answer, and this helpless feeling is getting in the way of my everyday life! I just want to live like a normal person..without a pounding head and energetic like i used to be. I have tried the following medications: flexiril, imitrex, relpax, topamax, fiorecet

Hi Marja,

I'm so sorry you are having to deal with this and at such a young age.

I don't know that much about migraine meds but we do have a whole section here at Health Central that is specific to helping people with this debilitating condition.

Check out our migraine section at http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/

In the meantime, have you gone to a migraine specialist or clinic?

Good luck and let us know how you fare.

So sorry about your headaches. Find a neurologist who is "headache certified". Try to figure out what is causing the headaches because the final answer may not be to depend on drugs forever.

Have you had an injury-  do you need "postural restorations therapy" a form or physical therapy- to help you get over that? Do you have an eye problem like convergence insufficiency that causes headache? Do you have TMD (temporal-mandibular (jaw) joint difficulties that cause the migraine)?

Is your lifestyle contributing to more headache without meaning to? Do you get enough sleep (8-9.25) regular hours every night with regular meal times and regular exercise? What can you figure out about it? Docs tend to throw meds at you and side effects can be hard. Try to find the things that guarantee the headache and try to reduce them in addition to what the docs may help you with. Figure out if there is a pattern to the headaches.
