Q: Is there a difference in treatment of an over-eating disorder if you know it is ADHD driven?

After dealing with obesity for 20 years I finally figured out that it was all about my (diagnosed) ADHD. Food satisfies my need for high stimulation. My need for high stimulation is because of my ADHD. So how do I fix this behavior? I take 20mg of Adderall daily which I love and it helps my ADHD a lot but I've never been able to figure out how to stop my over-eating behavior. Hope you can help me!! Thanks

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice. If you are treated for overeating, this treatment plan should be individual to your situation and therefore may or may not be different than someone else's treatment plan.

Terry Matlen previously offered tips to help Tame Your ADHD Eating Habits

which might help you. Terry explains " For many, starting and maintaining a diet and exercise routine falls under the "boring, hard to stay motivated" category. Thus, many with ADHD are faced with failure as they try to change their life styles. However, I've known many people with ADHD (myself included) who have found that changing their lifestyles can (and usually will), improve ADHD symptoms."

I hope these tips help.
