How does a recently diagnosed adult with ADD , get help...I recently went back to college at age 51

Jennifer

At age 51 I decided to get my bachelors degree in fine arts. I discovered that I was unable to remember, retain info or do well on tests. I would study and read the info 5-10 minutes before a test, only to forget as soon as I was in my chair. I have so much trouble drawing, in a class of adults who seem to :get it" right away.my drawings ( after three years of class's) look like a kindergartner drew them. I don't understand what's wrong with me. I work so hard and practice all the time. It looks hopeless to me. I went to the school counselor and was lightly tested and referred to a doctor. She put me on Adderall and Prozac. This help about 10-20%. She does not adjust my medication and I feel that it needs adjusting. ( did I add that of my 4 teen age kids, 2 have ADD?) I am not about to receive any accommodations, because I have not had a neuro psych (?) work up. How do I get help? I am unable in the large city of Los Angeles to locate a doctor who treat Adults with ADD. There are dozens of doctors here to help children. I am doing poorly in school and I try so hard. I often have to ask my fellow students what the teacher just said, because it sounded like spaghetti going in my ear. They seem to be able to speak simply to me , so I understand. My timing for projects and studying is completely off. I don't seem to get anything done and waste vast amounts of time. My room , full of art supplies and books, looks like a bomb went off. I can never find anything. I have become so incredibly disorganized. I really need help. Any suggestions where I can get help?

Each college has education assistance programs that are basically special education on the college level. What you do is contact the admissions office and inquire about the disability services available and they will connect you to the program at your college. I have a learning issue as well and have used the one at my school tremendously and find it very beneficial as I went from nearly failing to great grades.

Hope that helps,
