Q: My 16 year old son has this disorder, diagnosed only 3 years ago. Needless to say it has been difficult.

I have always been a little ADD but it was never diagnosed. My life has been a bit difficult (third marriage, substance abuse, shoplifting as a teen.) I would like to be able to help him before his life goes off track. He is currently in a DYS commitment as he violated his probation for destruction of property (at our home) They will have him until Christmas, so this is our chance to get him the help he needs. Any thoughts? Tracey

Hi Tracey

I think this is going to be critical for your son to get some help now.  Is it possible for you to seek the help of a therapist for him?  Is there anyone at your son's school who can help?  Or even a referral from his general practitioner?  Does he need residential treatment?  There are a lot of options for help.

I am going to give you the link to an organization called CHADD...they may be of help to you.

There is also NAMI and they now have a special section devoted to ADHD.  They have an information help line you can call.  Here is the information:

The Information HelpLine is an information and referral service which can be reached by calling 1 (800) 950-NAMI (6264), Monday through Friday, 10 am- 6 pm, Eastern time.

Let us know if we can be of more assistance to you.  I hope you can help your son.  I am sure he needs you very much.

Thank you for your question.
