Q: ADHD, Anxiety and Hair Pulling

My 10 yr old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD 2 yrs ago, and is currently taking Concerta. She resides with her grandmother and lost her Grandfather, (of which she was very close and helped care for) in Nov.2008. Since then she has begun pulling her hair out and has progressed to the point that she has very little hair left. She recently lost her Uncle ( of which she was very close), and observed the incident that took place that eventually took his life. My question is: Could the hair pulling be caused by some anxiety she may be experiencing from these losses ?  Her doctor also increased the mg. of Concerta, and she's now complaing of hearing voices. Is this a side affect of the increase, and should I tell her grandmother to take her to another doctor?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and can not give you medical advice.

Hair pulling, also known as Trichotillomania, can be caused by or is a form of anxiety. Usually, this type of behavior is seen in children and is often outgrown. However, it is sometimes treated with antidepressants, as many anxiety disorders are.

Stimulant medications, such as Concerta, can sometimes increase anxiety.

Certainly, this behavior should be addressed by your daughter's doctor. If you are not happy with the response from the doctor, you should be able to request a second opinion. You may need to contact your insurance company to find out procedures to make sure the second opinion visit is covered by the insurance.
