Q: Is it necessary to be admitted for other problems to get treated for ADD/ADHD?

Why do insurance companies not want to cover therapy for ADD/ADHD unless I have alcoholism or drug addiction and then I have to be admitted and will get treatment for my ADD/ADHD.  Seems to me like prevention is the best medicine.  I try really hard everyday to tolerate my condition but I did not choose to have it yet insurance does not want to cover the treatment I need.  Can anyone give me some insight as to what to do?

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Because all insurance policies are different and offer different benefits, it is hard to say what type of treatment one would cover. I am assuming you are looking for talk therapy to be covered and they are not accepting ADHD as an "acceptable" diagnosis for this type of treatment. You should ask for clarification of this from your insurance company.

You are also able to write a complaint to your state's insurance commissioner. Each state has an office that monitors insurance companies and this would be the place to start.
