Q: How do I help a 3 year old that throws violent tantrums when confronted about her behavior?

My 3 year old daughter is quite active and has a lot of trouble focusing, listining, following rules and staying still. I have tried  the time out method and it seems to not work no matter what i try to do. When she is confronted by either her father or myself when she is doing something she should not be doing, she throws violent tantrums and screams. I was advised by the doctor to let her scream it out in time out, and start the timer when she gets quiet. However, she does not get quiet she usually hurts herself or falls asleep which, no parent wants their child to hurt themselves. Falling asleep at any random times affects her sleep paterns. She is only 3 and I dont want to think that medication is my only option. Please help me understand other alternatives.
