Q: I do not have a IEP or 504 plan for my 14 year old son. This is his first year of highschool.

I have never set up a school plan but grades are starting to fall and homework is not getting done.

I would advise you to set up a plan immediately. My son is 16 and has had an IEP plan since 3rd grade. It has helped tremedously. You will need to stay in close contact with the teachers to make sure they do their part and keep the communication open with them. You are your child's advocat...noone is going to stand up for him but you. This isn't something to be shameful of. Everyone needs a little additional help in some areas at times. Good luck! I hope it helps him.

I forgot to mention that he will have to be 'tested into the program' and then will be reevaluated every so often to remain in the program. It is similar to ADHD testing. You and the teachers will have to fill out forms/evaluate him and he'll have to take tests and talk with the school pshyc. But it is worth him getting advantages such as one on one help, having extra time to complete assignments/tests, having tests read to him if needed, etc. Again, best of luck.
