Q: is strattera a common medication prescribed for add?

my son was recently disgnosed, finally, with slight add, is this medication usually prescribed? though he has no hyperactive issues..Thanks.

Not really, I've taken it before though. Unlike adderal or ritalin strattera is not a stimulant medication. You might want to give it to him at night instead of in the morning because it tends to make you drowsy. Anytime I forgot to take it, I got a major hyperactivity rebound and slept about 5 or 6 hours a night. So when he isn't on it expect some super long days.

Strattera is a "common" medication prescribed for ADD, but not as common as stimulants such as Concerta, Ritalin, Adderall, etc.  Strattera takes time to build up in the system and should not be started and stopped intermitently.  It is not the right medication if you plan to have your child take "medication holidays."  Medications effect each of us differently, so there can be a bit of trial and error to find the right one for any given individual.  Best wishes!
