ODD/ADHD 14yr girl, no med .
I have been assigned to work with a ODD/ADHD 14yr old girl, that is entering into the public school setting for the first year.So far not going well. I know she has a few favorite things. writing, kids and animals. She has a very odd sense of humour and is voiltile when high stress is apparent. How do I help her de-stress when she gets upset?

Thank you for your question. It is good that you are looking for answers to try to provide this student with the best possible school experience. I hope it all works well for you over this school year.
When working with this student, you will need to remember she will routinely resist any controls you will place on her, so working with her will require you to balance needing to enforce discipline and rules and be respectful of her automatic resistance based on the ODD. You will need to create structure and set limits for behaviors, using a reward and consequence type of structure.
UCLA offers the following tips:
* Providing the student with simple directives and choices.
* State pre-determined consequences clearly before problems occur.
* Listen to the student before reacting.
* Give brief and direct instructions in a calm tone.
* Discuss the problem privately with the student.
* Walk away before the situation gets too "hot."

I hope this helps
