Q: How do I help my co-worker who was recently diagnosed with adhd?

My co-worker has stated that she needs us to help her with her disability....to point out when she interrupts conversation or when she begins to agonize over something that is not under her control. ex: relabelling the materials in our department because one of the labels is faded....instead of continuing her job on the line.....her partner is out of work because she is relabelling something that we can do at a later date.....when that is pointed out she says it has to be done now even though the line is stopping and our team leader is getting irritated with her constant distractions.  What should I have done to help her?  I spoke calmly and told her we would get it straightened out and that she is exhibiting symptoms of her disorder/disability ....that it would be alright for now.....asking her to focus on the job at hand.......she couldn't until all was relabelled. She is not just a co worker to me but also a cherished friend. Explain how I can be a help instead of a hinderance.

Hi Vinita:

What you are describing sounds more like OCD. While ADHD can have this as an element, her inability or unwillingness to leave a task that she has decided is critical seems more obsessive compulsive. I understand that she is a cherished friend, so you may suggest that she take the recommended medications, if she hasn't started yet.

If a doctor hasn't suggested that she take one of the ADHD meds, or some kind of anti-anxiety or antidepressant, the best thing you can do is tell her that if she doesn't take steps to manage her disability then she can get fired. I know that you wouldn't want that to happen.

Best of Luck,

I'm continuing on what Diana had mentioned.

When ADD/ADHD patients with mild OCD like symptoms (many do) get on stimulant medication, the additional dopamine level pushes down the serotonin level level.

Lesser serotonin level makes the OCD symptoms worse.  If your friend had recently started stimulant medication (which almost all the ADD medications are), this is perhaps what is happening to her.

To counter this, they should simultaniously start an SSRI (often Prosac).
