Monday, March 02, 2009 Jackie Troyer asks

Q: At school what is a normal discipline plan for a 3rd grade boy which yelled in the hallway?

My son has ADHD.  He asked a boy to stop singing when his class was lined up in the hallway.  He was not given a chance to explain his side of a story so he yelled because he was frustrated.  My son was given 3 days detention by the principal.  This is my son first detention given by the school.

It is impossible to answer your question as each school district adopts it's own discipline code.  However, you were probably given the discipline regulations in a student handbook at the beginning of the year. If not, you should be able to contact the principal or the school administration building to ask for a copy of the discipline code. This should provide you with an idea of how the situation should have been handled and whether it was handled appropriately.
