Thursday, December 16, 2010 Maggie asks

Q: My son has been off of amphetemine salts for some time, but last night experienced a rage triggered by bad news about his sister. Can someone help me with how long this medication effects the brain.

He was VERY agitated, he had Very High blood pressure, extreme rage, was afraid of hurting himself or others, and when he came out of the rage he was paranoid and seeing things. He has used marijuana in the past and has been off adderol for a while-I am not sure how long because I was not the custodial parent for a while and he is asleep right now. His rage lasted about 5 hours. Is there some way that this is a leftover of the drug and how long do the effects of adderol or amphetamine salts stay in the system of a child? He is 16.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice. I can tell you, based on having raised a son with ADHD and talking to other parents of children with ADHD, that Adderall is a short-acting medication. The effects of the medication should not last longer than 4-12 hours, depending on which type of Adderall your son was taking. It should not cause high blood pressure, aggitation or rage weeks or months after taking the medication.

If this is a one-time event, there is probably nothing to be worried about, however, if your son is experiencing periods of rage, you might want to talk with your doctor. He would be able to determine if there is a physical cause for the rage and help you in finding ways to manage the extreme emotions.
