Q: what are the symptoms of mild autism?

My son was given adhd medicine for yrs, and was still always suspended from school, constantly having issues at home, or around the neighborhood.  When he was 12 and sent to a behavorial hospital, he was diagnosed as bi-polar instead.  There's still a chance he could have mild autism on top of it.  I know they have wanted him to be tested for this for at least a yr now but are extremely short-handed here.

Autism is being defined so differently as they are finding a whole spectrum of disorders along those lines. My son was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder- Not Otherwise Specified. Sounds like alot but it means that he doesn't have one type of disorder in the spectrum of autism, but rather has bits of several kinds. He has limited understanding of social interaction, other peaple's emotions, and the flow of conversation between two peole. He doesn't understand idioms like: "It's raining cats and dogs" and misses out on the use of facial expressions, gestures and tones of voice and the meaning of how they are being used in everyday conversaion. It is a constant learning process and I can never give up. Have you done research? I found it helpful to google autism spectrum diorders to see what is out there. Good luck, hope this was helpful.
