I would like to know if my son should be going to a therapist or some sort of other treatment while on medication. Or if there is anything else that can be done instead of him having to take medication.

Yes, you should be taking your son to a therapist.  I did and it help me and my son understand what he was going thorough.  Every week she would ask how his week was and if he forgot to bring his homework home, she would ask him then what do you need to do.  She would make him figure things out for himself.  She help me with my problem and how to deal with my son and his problems.  I also read a lot of books on the subject.  I tried not having my son on meds, but it did not work, he need them.  The doctor had to try different meds on him to find the one that worked for him and then he was alright.
