My Grandson was diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. Is several months in care behavioral hospital advised?

I think because he is on Medicaid and 16 years old and he has been unruly for a year the social worker wants to put him in a behavioral hospital  two hours away. After reading all about ADHD and ODD I think Family counciling as well as individual therapy at home with the family is the way to go. What is your opinion?

Hi there

This is difficult to answer without knowing all the details about what is currently going on with your grandson.

What reasons does the social worker give for wanting to place him in a hospital?  Is he at risk for causing harm to himself or to others?  Is it a crisis situation?

It is my opinion that the least restrictive measures should always be used first...to have a hierachy of treatment options.  Unless it truly is a crisis situation and there are no other options.

Have you voiced your opinion concerning your ideas?  What do his parents say?  And what does your grandson feel about all of this?

I think you are right in that family counseling and in home treatment will be needed at some point if it is not offered now.  Even if he does go inpatient for awhile he will need supports when he comes home.  It is good to look into these services now.

I would express your concerns and suggestions to the social worker and to his parents.  I wish you the best of luck.  I know this must be a very hard situation for you all.

Let us know how things evolve and thank you for your question.
