Friday, February 26, 2010 Yvonne G. asks

Q: What is available for adults who show serious signs of having ADHD?

For years I have suspected that I might have this disorder.  I used drugs and alcohol for many years, however now I am in recovery, almost eighteen years and eleven without tobacco.

In 2005 I went back to college and have since earned an Associates and Bachelor degree.  I am now in Grad school for my Masters degree.  My problem is my focus and retention skills.  I'm distracted more now than before.  Is there anything I can do that will help me to stay on point?

Thanks for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

First, let me see congratulations on all your successes! You should be quite proud of yourself, having overcome substance abuse and tobacco (I quit smoking myself a while back and know how difficult that is.)

If you believe you may have ADHD, the first place to get started would be to talk with a doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing. There are some online screening tests that you can take. These aren't meant to be used as diagnostic tests but can give you an idea on whether you should seek additional help.

ADHD Self Report Scale

Jasper/Goldberg Adult ADD Screening

You may be able to print out the results and bring with you to the doctor and use them as a starting point for a discussion on possible ADHD.

An effective treatment plan is the best way to start managing symptoms.

I am also giving you some links on additional information on inattention and adult ADHD and some strategies for helping to manage it.
