Tuesday, August 31, 2010 RMichael31 asks

Q: I have trouble focusing, cannot hold a job, failed school 3 times, forget to pick my son up from school. I think I have had and do have ADHD or ADD,

I have taken Adderall recently after researching treatment for ADHD, while taking it I felt like I was in control of my responsibilities, had more motivation, and much more social with family while not feeling ''high'', just in control. How do I suggest this may be a good treatment for me to my Doctor? I have never had drug abuse problems, my concern is that I am sure Doctors are often asked for this medication as it is abused, the fact is it really helps me, don't know what to do. Thank you.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice. I can provide some suggestions based on having spoken with many medical professionals and adults with ADHD.

I am assuming from your question that you have taken Adderall that was not prescribed for you. This is dangerous and you should not do it. I am sure you are aware, however, I need to let you know that you should discontinue taking any medication not prescribed for you by your doctor.

I would suggest taking an online screening test for ADHD. These are not used for diagnostic purposes but can tell you if you should speak with a doctor. In most of the online screening tests, you can print out the results. This would give you information to discuss with your doctor. Sometimes it is easier to talk if you have specific information as a starting point. Clicking the link above will bring you to a list of screening tests available.

As far as talking with your doctor, he may receive requests from people wanting to abuse the medication but I am sure he receives many requests from people like you, those that want to use the medication for a legitimate diagnosis to improve their lives.

Make an appointment, use the screening tests and read as much as you can about adult ADHD. You might want to ask for a referral to a mental health professional that specializes in adult ADHD and is familiar with how the symptoms manifest in adults.

Please check back and let me know how it goes.
