Q: How can I help my son learn to manage his condition without prescription medications?

Hi! I have a 10yr old son who has ADHD and we are having trouble managing it.  He is currently being treated with Concerta ER but we are seeking alternate treatments and methods to help him learn to manage his condition.  He has been on several different meds, and honestly, I dont want him on ANY of these medications...they scare me.  But he is absolutely out of control when he is not medicated.  We have tried everything from diet, to "natural" remedies (and if you ask me, these make his condition worse!), yoga, meditation, and even reward/consequence charts...some of these things will work for a short period of time, but they eventually lose their effectiveness.  Any suggestions, tips, or even just a push in the right direction will be greatly appreciated...We just want to help our son to manage this and be successful in life...??  HELP...please..?

You do know that children who take ADHD medications with therapy, have a better chance of not medicating themselves through alcohol or other drugs? I understand the concern or being falsely diagnosed as ADHD when it may be parenting styles. However, if he has ADHD and is left untreated, he will fall behind his other classmates. You owe to him to educate yourself about ADHD-- it's real. I have it and I wish that I had parents who knew and helped me get treatment when I was a child.

I suggest you go to ADDITUDE and also to the Mayo Clinic Website.  Theres alot of information on ADHD.  My son is 12 years old and I struggle with helping him myself.  You need to become as educated as possible.  Become passionate and being your sons advocate in school.  Meds can help with a balance of possible family therapy or one on one with a therapist.  It helps if the child has an awareness that he even has a problem.  I am going through this right now so I understand what you are going through.
