Q: Are auditory processing problems related to ADHD?

My son was diagnosed with ADHD at age 5, but we knew as early as 18 months. He is now in middle school, and is somewhat successful. We always have ongoing concerns, and we have to continually advocate for him. I have a friend whose son has similar tendencies, and they have recently had him diagnosed with auditory processing problems. It has changed this child's academics. This seems very similar to ADHD symptoms. I have read what I can find, but am still interested. I do know our school district does not recognize auditory processing as needing to be addressed, therefore no information available. I am always looking for additional ways to help my child, and just wondered.

I have ADHD as well as dyslexia and I have perfect hearing except for the highest decimal.  However, my mother has always pointed out to me that I do not have a hard time hearing, but that sometimes people will be talking to me and it will just go right out through the other ear. It is not that I am not interested in what people are saying but it is because I get destracted very easily and lose focus sometimes.  This should be addressed at your school and I think that it is rediculous that it is not.  This is very common for people who have dyslexia, and ADHD.  And just to let you know encouraging your child to do things and try new activities, to find out what he is good at and not; and just to be there for him and love him is the most important thing that you can do.  But you should talk to his school about addressing the problem the next chance you get.
