Hi Rick,

It's a sad situation when physicians- and there are many- refuse to suggest other ADHD medications. The truth is, many are simply not educated about adult ADHD and meds. There are, of course, patients who will abuse stimulants, but a well trained physician should usually be able to spot those who will use their meds other than as intended.

As you know, there are a number of ADHD medications. Typically, if one doesn't work, the physician goes down the list and tries another. Or they work on tweaking dosages to see if that helps.

In your case, you might ask the doctor directly why other options aren't being considered. If you do not have a history of substance abuse or don't have any medical conditions that preclude you from taking something else, it may be time to get another opinion.

There are a few lists online of clinicians who specialize in ADHD. Try:

www.addconsults.com

www.ADD.org

www.CHADD.org

Also, there are many articles here that have great information on medications for ADHD. Perhaps printing them out and giving them to your doctor might be of help.
