Q: Trying to determine diagnosis and treatment options for my 16 year old son.

My son has always lost things. It seems to have gotten worse during his teen years. He has also never been very good at being prepared - remembering those essential bits of information that are necessary to make it through live. Bicycles, keys, cameras, phones, school books, and numerous other items have just been left somewhere and forgotten. Homework is either left at school or left at home in the morning. He has never been hyperactive - just the opposite. He is more like a sloth than a ping pong ball. He makes friends easy and has several. Recently, he received his drivers license. During the first two months, he caused two accidents. Luckily no injuries were involved. Both accidents resulted from distractions in attention. Not the normal type of distraction but just losing attention on the driving process. Just prior to the last accident, he checked for traffic before backing up but then decided to adjust the radio right afterward. In his mind, he had already checked for traffic- even though it was probably 20 seconds earlier - so h knew it was OK to proceed.

As a result of these, my son has lost a promising job in a field that interests him and is currently not driving. Any help or insight that can be provided is very appreciated.

Well, I have been living with ADHD and Autism my whole entire life and have been on over 60 kinds of medicine prescribed by my doctor. And, I have leared that that is not the way to go. counseling may be a little better but your son may lose intereast after a while. I think the best way to go is to inform everyone around him of his disorder so that they understand and can help him cope with it. The best treatment for ADHD , I think, is understanding. Smile Good luck!
