Q: Is there a shortage on 10 mg Focalin brand and generic?

My son has been on Focalin XR, but needed an additional short acting dose to get through homework.  The doctor just went from 5mg to 10 mg for the afternoon dose.  When I tried to get it filled, all of the major chain pharmacies where out and Walgreen's had a three week backorder.  Is there a shortage and why?

I am sorry, I do not have an answer for you. The pharmacies would be better able to answer why this medication is on backorder.

Focalin (brand name) has been discontinued. You can try looking for the generic.

I am needing to get the brand name of Focalin 10 mg. It's the yellow one that works best. The generics haven't worked for me.

I was told by the Target pharmacist today that the generic Focalin (manufactured by Teva) has been discontinued.

I spoke to a Teva representative that said the main ingredient for this will not be released to them "by the government".  Teva cannot manufacture it until they get the main ingredient.  I will be writing my congressman.

I believe that the generic made by Teva is the one that is an issue.  Walgreens gave me the same story but my other pharmacy (Jewel-Osco) had no problems with there orders.  The brand name Focalin XR appears to still be in producation and there is no mention on their website.

Can you find out the generic producer that Jewel-Osco uses?

I was told last year by both Walgreens and CVS that there was a copyright dispute re: the generics and they had been pulled from market.  Not good, as this was what worked best for my son.  Generic: $10  Brand: $70  We switched to Ritalin - wish he could get the generic Focalin back.
