Q: What effect does phenobarbital have on babies?

My great-nephew is 1 month old and is on phenobarbital for seizures.  He is very irritated, cries alot and moves around like something is hurting him when he is drinking his bottle.  This is all the time.  He stays up for long periods of time and cries.

Vicoria,                                                                                                            I may not have the answer you are looking for, however I am a mother with a son who was taking phenobarbital for the first two years of his life. He is now 8, we suspect he has ADHD, He also has developmental delay. He is a good boy with big heart, but he does have his struggles. I can't say for sure phenobarbital is the cause, but it has made me wander. There is an artical I just found on 9/16/08 in The New York Times Health section called "Drug for Babies' Seizures Is Found Ineffective and Perhaps Harmful'. you may find it informative.                                              Sincerly,                                                                                                   concerned mother
