Q: using Ritalin (5mg, extended release) for the past 3 days and need advice on its effects

This may sound like a weird situation, but maybe someone can help.

I have for the past 3 days successfully gone cold turkey to rid myself of my dependency on the pain killer, Tramadol (Ultram).   Since I do have some attention deficit and also since I had positive experiences with Ritalin decades ago, I decided to take Ritalin-5mg (reverse says "m" in a square)- it must be the generic version.

My questions are as follows:

1. I take a ritalin at 5 a.m. for the past 3 days. I believe it has been successful in helping me "kick" the tramadol addiction I have experience for a fiew years. I do "miss" tramadol, but I am convinced I have made the proper decision.

2. I would like to take a second 5mg late morning or early p.m. but don't know if I can/should. My body hasn't experienced any significant changes that I can't handle with the substitution of drugs. Yet the mild euphoria associated with Ritalin has a positive effect on my job.

3. when can i take a 2nd one, if at all. Since they're time released, how long do they stay in the system and do the effects gradually wear off?

4. If I pursue this plan for just the next two weeks, I believe I will have totally licked tramadol's psychological as well as its physical dependance on me.  Am I correct that most people would have almost no problem stopping ritalin after a couple of weeks without any withdrawl symptems..  Thanks for any advice out there coming my way

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

First, I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give medical advice. It seems from your question that you are not under a doctor's care for the Ritalin you are taking. Since this medication can interact with other medications and cause side effects and may be dangerous if you have an underlying heart condition, I must urge you to speak with your doctor about taking Ritalin. Together, you and your doctor will be able to determine what would be the best dosage for you.

Extended release stimulant medications generally last between six and eight hours, depending on how quickly a person metabolizes the medication. Remember, this is a guideline and based on individual metabolism, you could be different.

When taken as prescribed, stopping Ritaline normally does not cause withdrawal symptoms.

Again, I must urge you to talk with your physician about using Ritalin.
