what does Concerta 36 mg mean?

Does it mean that every hour i get 3mg of the methylphenidate for the next 12 hour?
OR
For the 12 hours that it is effective i will get 36 mg for each hour?

I am not a medical professional. This question could probably be better answered by a pharmacist. However, from what I understand on extended release, the medication is released into your system slowly, over a number of hours.
