Friday, October 31, 2008 Ruthie G asks

Q: My son is taking Aderall XR 30mg, he has to take it in applesauce, what may happen?

The doctor told me to open the capsule and put it in applesauce for him to take, is it "really" ok to take XR in a capsule that way? He is 6 and cannot swallow capsules. He fights me on it and sometimes goes to school without it, he cannot afford to do that either. I always end up getting an email or phone call from his school!! Does anyone know what kind of effect that can have?? I've asked many times to try something different but he told me he can go up to 60 mg safely( Of course, I wouldn't allow that) Help!!

Hi Ruthie,

Thank you for your question. According to the package insert for Adderall XR, the contents of the capsule may be sprinkled on applesauce. The applesauce should be consumed immediately, and swallowed without chewing (you don't want to break open the little sprinkles). When information like this is included in the package insert, it usually means that the product has been tested in applesauce and there is no effect on the medication - you get the same dose into the body, and it has the same effects as if it was still in the capsule. So as long as your son isn't chewing the applesauce and breaking open the sprinkles, he should be just fine. I hope this helps.

Best of luck,

Casey

your kid is only 6 and should not be taking such power full amphetamines.  by the time they would normally grow out of their hyperactive/non attentive behavior  they have even worse problems developing.  In some cases adderall is necessary  but  for a 6 year old it is not fair .
