can ADD adult also have stuttering problems
is it common for an adult with ADD to have speech problems like stuttering.
Ever since I met my husband, about 40 years ago, he has had a stuttering problem. He didn't know he had ADD until I discovered that my daughter also has ADD as illustrated by concentration and learning problems in junior high and high school. He will start a sentence many times without ending it, and then begin another sentence, many times having trouble with that too. Then he will finally get to explain something, yet I have difficulty understanding what point he is trying to make. We are married long enough that I know what he is about to say before he even says it, but the stuttering seems to be getting worse and I don't know how to help him.
He had tried Ritalin in the past which really helped him to concentrate, especially at work, but it raised his blood pressure and stopped taking it.
Hi,
Yes, adults and children with ADHD can have stuttering problems. In fact, it's thought that up to 26% of children with ADHD also have a stuttering problem.
It's not known why this may be; perhaps it's a neurological issue. But others feel that it may have to do with the hyperactive/impulsive nature of the beast. Those with ADHD often have rushing thoughts that they try to get out, either out of impulsivity or because of a fear that they'll forget what they're trying to say.
If your husband is bothered by this, he should consult with a speech and language therapist.
Hope this helps!
