Q: are there alternatives to adhd medicines? what are the dangers of switching a 12 year old boy from 36mgs to 54mgs of concerta?

As far as increasing medication, your doctor would know best. You should ask what signs you should be aware of that may signal trouble. For example, racing heart beat, shortness of breath, etc. Also ask which symptoms would require you to call and speak with the doctor and which would require immediate medical attention. By having this information, you can feel more comfortable knowing you will know how to react in any situation. Keep in mind, however, that most people tolerate ADHD well and do not experience any or experience only mild side effects. Normally these will go away in a few weeks.

 

As far as alternatives, there really are not any that have been established to be effective in treating ADHD. You can read about some of the claims for alternative medications and treatments: Alternative ADHD Treatment

 

Remember, medication is just one part of treatment for ADHD. Behavior modification is just as important.
