Sunday, December 12, 2010 sheryl asks

Q: My son sufferred a TBI this year and sufferring short term memory loss due from the TBI.He is add/adhd and I would like to know if any of the meds for adhd would help him with is short term loss?

I am at my whits end and it hurts because he now thinks he is stupid.He is 35 and has a CAD degree.He is very smart and he is at the point because he can't remember simple things that he does not want to be around people much.Also in the past he was on Adderral 30mg.Would that med help at all with his memory loss?

I was interested in your question and so did some research. According to TBIRecoveryCenter.org "Because some of the characteristics of ADHD are similar to the symptoms of some TBI survivors with frontal lobe damage, studies have been performed to determine if medications used to treat ADHD can be helpful in the treatment of TBI. These studies have produced some evidence that Ritalin is helpful with some TBI survivors in improving concentration and reducing impulsivity. A study is currently underway at the University of Washington, one of the model centers in the U.S. for treatment of traumatic brain injuries, to determine if Ritalin improves short term memory (also called working memory) in survivors who have memory impairment."
