Q: I just found out that my college son has been abusing Adderall. Does this show on a drug test?

Son is 20 years old.  He has been using Marijuana since age 14.  We have gone through so much and it has been an emotional rollercoaster.  After many times of trying to help him with is additiction, at 17 1/2 we had him transported to Montana to a school that deals with children with drug and emotional issues.  He left the school at 18 without finishing the program.  He has continued to lie and steal for his drugs.  His recent story at school is that he has colon cancer and is on Chemo and needs pain pills that his insurance won't pay.  He is working on the sympathy of others and is always a victim.  We have offered him treatment, but he will not come to terms that he is a drug addict.

I would appreciate some help with his recent addiction to Adderall.  Does this show up on a drug test?  I believe he is also crushing and snorting the Adderall.

Thank you,

Jody R.

I am sorry for your struggles and difficulties with your son. I can certainly relate to much of what you have said and hope that at some point your son decides to seek treatment and get help. I know that once our children turn 18 there is so little that we can do and it is so frustrating for us, as parents.

There are home drug testing kits available at local pharmacies and you want to look for a kit that covers amphetamines, as this is what Adderall should show up as.

Good luck and let me know how it is going.
