Q: Relative strengths/characteristics of ADHD medications?

I have a question that may or may not have an answer. In fact, the answer may be easily found on this site I'm just to lazy or unobservent to have found it yet. Laughing

Is there a chart or relative comparison post about the differing strengths of ADHD medications? In other words, I know they all have somewhat different side-effects and a persons individual responses may vary, but is there a continuum of strengths such as the Ritalin class are less stimulating than the dextroamphetamines (Adderall)? THe last comparison is not necessarily the case but I needed an example of what I'm looking for.

My reason, my son was switched from Methylin 5mg three times a day to Concerta 18mg once a day (he learned how to swallow a pill!) because we'd been having rather drastic roller coastering on the three times a day dosing. On the Concerta he is MUCH smoother, and happier I believe, during the day. The Concerta and it's maintenance is monitored by his child psychiatrist but at his recent yearly physical the GP felt he might be overmedicated and told me there are several other ADHD medications that come in lower doses than 18mg. I'm a little confused because I got the impression from his psychiatrist that, although there are lower mg dosages on other medications, the Methylin class is the mildest and a first line for younger children if they respond well to treatment.

Probably too much personal info when all I need is a chart or something but perhaps the background might help you experts out there answer more completely.

Thank you,

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I do not believe there is a chart such as you are requesting as different medications come in different strengths. For example, Adderall comes in strengths of

5 mg
7.5 mg
10 mg
12.5 mg
15 mg
20 mg
30 mg

And Strattera comes in strengths of

10 mg
18 mg
25 mg
40 mg
60 mg

However, these stengths are not relative to one another, it depends on the active ingredient within each medication.

There is a chart that compares different medications for ADHD (not on this site) that may help answer your question

ADHD Medication Chart

I hope this helps

Since Methylin and Concerta are in the same class, it is mg for mg. so the 18 is just a tad higher than the 15.  Other drugs, like Adderall or Focalyn, are 2:1, and those would be too high a dose.
