I need help, My 10 yr old daugher is in the 5th grade and I am worried that she may be ADD.
she makes bad grades, She loves School but she don't want to do her homework and she won't listen to anything I tell her,She is really messy and not very organized,It's like a fight every nite just trying to get her to do her homework,It's like she don't care if she does good in school as long as she gets to play. We can go over and over her spelling words and she will know them, then when I give her a test she gets them all wrong. When she does do her homework She tries to hurry up and get it done and don't follow directions and when I check it , it is all wrong. I don't know what else to do. I thought about having her checked for ADD but I am scared to death of ADD meds, but I am afraid to let it go also, Can anyone help me.
Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.
As a parent, we are always concerned and worried when we think there might be something wrong with our child or we see our child struggling. Despite that, it is our job to make sure our children have every opportunity to succeed and do well.
I am a big proponent of parents knowing best. If you think there is something wrong, then you should check it out. You know your child best. You know what she is capable of and what she is not doing but should be doing.
As far as medications, that would be a decision for you to make with your doctor, if your child does indeed have ADHD. The first step would be to find out. I would not let your fear of medication stop you from finding out, as it may be that your daughter does not have ADHD.
There are some online screening tests you can complete. These should not be used for diangnostic purposes but can help you decide whether you should contact your doctor and many have a feature that allows you to print out the results so you can bring to your doctor to help you discuss what you are concerned about.
