Q: My adopted son is 12 and was diagnosed some time ago with ADHD. He currently takes Vyvanse and Intuniv(tick related side effect). I just started GABA. What is the recommended dose? Thank you.
We started him on Gaba, 500mg. Is that the right dose? He is currently 80lbs. Are we ok to increase the dose? Are there other natural supplements you can recommend? We have seen the Gaba and Intuniv help with his sleep issues.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.
I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice or recommend medications, either prescription or natural supplements. Because supplements can interfere with other medications as well as cause side effects, it is highly recommended that you talk with your doctor before using any, for yourself or for your children. For more information see: Nutritional and Herbal Supplements
According to the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, "The appropriate dose of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) depends on several factors such as the user's age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for GABA. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using."
I would suggest speaking with your son's doctor about whether this supplement is appropriate and safe and, if so, what dosage would be right for your son.
