Q: Is it possible to be diagnosed with ADHD at 24?

I'm 24 years old. I've always had trouble staying focused or being still, etc. But I never thought it was a medical problem until it started to get worse in the last year or two. It has been affecting my school work and my personal life. After doing research online I started to realize that I might have ADHD. My best friend has it as well and her doctor prescribes her adderral. I've taken it once and it was the first time in a long time I felt like myself. I don't know what the next step is for me. Who should I go to and what should I say? Should I tell the doctor that I've tried adderall or just see what he says? And what kind of questions and/or tests should I expect from him/her? I am in my last year of college and have been placed on academic probation! I've always tried to do my best at school but its just so hard to stay focused in class and especially during exams. I can never get anything done at home because I'm always all over the place. It is really affecting my life and I need help.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice or tell you whether you have ADHD.

I can tell you that it is possible for you to be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. The symptoms must have been present during childhood, but not everyone is diagnosed as a child. Sometimes, as you must deal with more and more responsibilities, the symptoms become more pronounced and interfere with your ability to complete tasks or stay on track.

Many people are not diagnosed until adulthood. If you believe you have ADHD you should consult with your doctor. Many adults feel more comfortable going to a mental health specialist for diagnosis, partly because many family doctors do not have extensive knowledge of ADHD in adults. However, based on your insurance, you may need to go to your family doctor for a referral.
