Q: Questions about "Video Games for ADHD"

Hi,

I just watched the video about Video Games for ADHD. Does it work on older teens (i.e. college Freshman) and adults? What about patients with additional conditions like Bipolar? Where do you find a listing of providers who offer this type of treatment? There are two of us (mom & daughter) in this house with ADHD & Bipolar and we're both college students. The meds and psychotherapy just aren't quite doing the trick. Something's gotta give some better results to at least one of us. My life's half spent, but she's just starting out. She's so smart, but I've watched her zeal, confidence and grades go downhill over the past 5 years. I don't want her to give up on school or her dreams.

I was able to get part of my dreams accomplished because I didn't know I had it so the Navy gave me a way out of the stupid little hick town my parents stuck me in when I started high school. My career came to a shattering halt though when I hit that Bipolar depression wall in my 30's.

My daughter will never be able to get into the military because of this, so she can never get at least an external structure going. I can't give her much of one anymore and her dad left after 2 years of me being sick (I ended up with an autoimmune disorder too, likely due to malaria). We've known about her ADHD since she was 3. The Bipolar came on the scene a little later and then was diagnosed at 9 when she finally told me about some stuff. I just want her to have a fighting chance at a good life as an adult. Anything treatment that will give her that, I want to try.

Thanks.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical provider and would not be able to give you medical advice. I also do not have any personal or professional experience with the video games to  help ADHD.

In previously speaking with a provider of this type of service (at a conference), this type of treatment helps increase attention and often helps students with ADHD and some types of learning disabilities. The provider I spoke with was from Smart Brain Technologies. You should be able to go to their site and see if there are any providers in your area. The provider should be able to tell you more about this technology and whether it would be good for someone with ADHD and bipolar.
