Thursday, September 03, 2009 grandma D asks

Q: What do you do when you have a ADHD, bipolar, ADD, 18 year old living in your house since she was 3

yrs. old, and a husband that wants her to be almost perfect, and it's worst now since he has been dignoised with cancer, which makes him flustrated at almost everything she does? I just seem to be in the middle of all this arguing and yelling all the time. What can I do to escape this sometimes? Even when I'm talking with her, he gets involved in the conversation, not to talk but to yell and scream with her. This has been going on for years, but getting worst since his illness. Please advise. She is my granddaughter.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com. Kudos for you for caring for your granddaughter throughout her life. Having a son (age 24) with bipolar and ADHD, I know it has not always been easy.

Coming up with some specific rules and goals for your granddaughter that your husband can agree to may be helpful. Write down the goals and the steps to reach each goal. Give a copy to your granddaughter and keep one for you. If your granddaughter is working toward the goal and making progress by completing some of the steps, you will ba able to measure how she is doing. This will also give you something to discuss with your husband and show him that she is trying.
