Thursday, February 25, 2010 mom of ADHD child asks

Q: Teens with ADHD and athletics, what do you do when they won't go to practice?

Do ADHD teens have a hard time blending with athletics? Mine seems to enjoy but uses any excuse to not go, and he is good at the sport he does. Do not understand.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Each teen with ADHD is different, some are outgoing and get along well with many different people, some have some difficulties with social skills. It would be impossible for me to say whether your son has a hard time getting along and blending with his teammates. He may feel different or feel as if he doesn't fit in, or there may be some other reason why he doesn't want to go to practice.

As far as what to do when he doesn't go to practice, that would be a question for you to decide. Does your son want to stop playing the sport? Does he understand the consequences of not attending practice, such as not getting to participate? Is there a personality conflict between your son and the coaches or some of the teammates? Are there other activities he would prefer to be doing?

And how would you feel if your son doesn't belong to the team anymore?

You may want to have a long talk with your son to see if you can find out what is really behind his lack of motivation. Teens are great at hiding what they feel, especially if they are feeling inadequate about something. You also might want to speak with the coaches to get a different perspective on the situation.

Please let me know what happens.

I am a mother (of 3) also.  My son often says he does not want to go, but once there he loves it.    I usually ask "can we give it a try and if you don't like it then we do not have to keep going?"  But one for one he loves it once he is there, like I said.

Good Luck.
