Q: My 13 year old son is on 35 mg of Adderall a day for four years.

He is doing great. Is it possible that he built up a tolerance to his medication and is doing this all on his own.  It has not been raised for four years and he is doing great. I would like to take him off of it if he can do this good with out it.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

Since your son has been on the medication for several years, I would imagine the medication has something to do with how well he is doing.

If you are interested in taking your son off the medication, please talk with your doctor first. It is never advisable to start, change or stop taking medication without first discussing it with your doctor. The doctor may suggest reducing the medication or trying without the medication for a short period of time and observing your son's behaviors and school performance.

Remember, however, medication is just one part of treatment. Behavior modification is just as important and both should work together to help increase the chances of success.
