Q: Should I raise my sons ADHD meds because of his impulsive behavior?

My 8 year old with ADHD keeps doing extremely impulsive things that are getting him into trouble. He is on Concerta 27mg and Prozac 10mg. I am wondering with the things that he is doing if I should raise his ADHD meds. He tried to skip school, to go to toys R us (2 months ago) and today he tried getting on a school bus(he walks home from school). I am at my wits end with him and I am not sure what else to do. But I'm not sure if this behavior is b/c of his ADHD or is b/c of the prozac that he is on. All this stuff started after he started the prozac. So at this point he is putting himslef into alot of danger and I am trying my best to keep him safe. The prozac has been a life saver it has really helped his mood and temper and our household has really calmed down. But now things he's doing has us extremely concerned. I will be calling his Dr on Monday to set up an appt.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice. I agree that the best thing would be to discuss your son's recent behavior with your doctor.

I am sorry you are having such a difficult time with your son. It sounds like some of his behaviors can be dangerous and you are right to be concerned.

I am not sure whether this can be caused by Prozac, but you can find out more about this medication:

Prozac

I know mood changes can be one possible side effect, and certainly your doctor would be better able to explain to you what to watch out for and what steps you may be able to take to alleviate some of the side effects.

Please check back and let us know how the doctor's appointment goes.

Hi

Please do not raise your sons medication.  I would recommend The Nurtured Heart Approach for you and your son.  This approach has done miracle for me and my difficult son and thousands of parents. Have a look at www.difficultchild.com.

Research showes that Affirmation changes the chemical in the brain. www.arlenetaylor.org.

Bye

Hi Crissy

Have you called the doctor by now?  Has he been seen yet?  I would not do anything to his medications without consulting his doctor first.  More is not always better when it comes to medication.  And there are just some things that medication cannot cure...there will probably always be some behaviors related to his ADHD which you will have to help him manage through behavior management strategies.

My son is taking Prozac as well and it has greatly improved his mood... but one definite side effect I am seeing is an increase in hyperactivity.  Not sure if this relates to your situation.  But you may want to see what side effects there are to your son's meds.

Eileen has written about impulsiveness as symptom of ADHD and what you can do about it.

Please let us know what happens.  I know this is hard on you as you may be worried about what your son may think up next.  They sure do keep you on your toes don't they?

Hang in there and keep writing to let us know how things are going for you and your son.
