Q: Does previous illicit methamphetamine usage affect dosage for ADHD meds?

I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD and depression for which I have been prescribed Buproprion (Wellbutrin) and Adderol. I just started the Adderol and I think it has helped a little, but I still take it and go right to bed: it never seems to give me the "energy" people talk about, but I have been able to finish a couple of projects that I have been trying to finish for years.

I wondered if my history of illegal methamphetamine usage (crystal) makes Adderol less effective. I used crystal every day for nearly 20 years and have been clean for about 2 years. I used to explain to people that meth was like a vitamin to me, I seldom got "high" off of it, but felt completely disassociated and "fuzzy" without it. I was hoping that Adderol could help clear some of the fuzz, but it just makes me sleepy.

Is there another drug that works better for recovered addicts? Is there another mechanism for ADHD treatment that doesn't involve increased dopamine production as it's primary effect? My psychiatrist will adjust my dosage if needed, but I was just hoping to be informed when I see him next week.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I am not looking for someone to replace the advice of my doctor, but rather I am looking for information that I can discuss with him next week. Thanks in advance,

wish I could give you an answer but it really does depend on the person. Each person reacts differently to medications, so what works for one person might not work for another. Medications, such as Adderall, also react differently based on diet, for example, Adderall does not work as well if you have orange juice shortly before or after taking the medication.

For some people, it is a matter of trial and error finding the right medication and the right dosage. After years of speaking with individuals with ADHD, I can say that it really is different for each person.
