I am wanting to go to a Gluten-Free diet for our family but the cost of some items is crazy!

TXmomof4

I have one child who is ADHD and another that is ADD.  we are a family of six and the thought of having to pay $8 for one loaf of bread is disheartening.  many of the other food items we can still pay normal price for however, the breads, pastas and desserts are so expensive.  Any suggestions??  Are they good or will I have to bribe my family to eat them??

also, does this need to be an All or nothing lifestyle.  Will even the smallest amount every now and then set them back?

Thank you.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I have not tried a gluten-free diet in my home so would not be able to answer your question. I agree that $8 for a loaf of bread is expensive and could make being on this diet prohibititive for many families.

Merely Me did previously write a post about this diet. This might provide you with some additional information.

Hi there

Yeah it can expensive I agree.  But if you make the items from scratch then you do save quite a bit of money.  You can buy the flours in bulk and bake a bunch of loaves of bread and freeze them.  There are many recipes on the Internet to help and just let me know if you would like me to give you some links.

Also yes unfortunately it is an all or nothing thing.  You might as well not do it if you cannot eliminate the wheat and gluten entirely.  But I suppose some say you could do the process gradually so your family gets used to things.  But if you wanted to see any benefits...yeah...all or nothing.

Hope this helps.  Thank you for your question.
