Can Focalin cause chest or heart pain /discomfort?

C Ward

My son has ADHD and is 8 years old. He has been on Focalin for 3 and a half years now. This past year his dose has been 30mg a day . Given at 7:20, 11:20, and 3:20. It works wonderfully except it takes him awhile to get to sleep. This week , once each day for 3 days now, he has reported to me that his "heart hurts"..but he cannot describe the pain. He has never been tested for heart problems, but his blood pressure is taken every three months at his med rechecks. He goes to the doctor today. We ruled out indigestion and he does not have a cold, at least not that we can tell. he has never complained like this before. Is it possible for the Focalin to be causing the chest discomfort even though he has been on this same dose for about 1 year?

The drug information for Focalin indicates that chest pain, palpitations,  and anxiety are all possible side effects of the medication. This is definitely something that you need to discuss with your doctor. Although your son has been taking the medication without adverse effects for a few years, the medication is still relatively new, and the long-term effects aren't well-defined. Tell your son's doctor about what he's experiencing and then go from there.

Best of luck,

Casey
