Sunday, September 18, 2011 help asks

Q: Hi my son ,15,was on every med there was. He started with tics so after 3 years of all meds I took him off. nothing worked. He struggles so bad in school. Is there anything natural I could give him.

He takes omega 3 already , but what is the max he could take and what else could he take to help him focus. He' the type of kid that gets the side effects of meds. He does not sleep well. He's a very light sleeper. Doesn't fall asleep right away. He'll lye awake for about 1 hour or more before he falls asleep. This has been going on since he was 5 1/2. I have been trying to help him the best I can but he needs help.

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

Unfortunately, there is no natural alternative that has been shown to be effective in treating ADHD. You want to make sure your son is getting enough exercise as this has been shown to be good as a supplemental way of improving symptoms of ADHD.

As far as the Omega 3, you should speak with your doctor about the correct dosage, I would not be able to tell you whether your son should take Omega 3 or how much he should take. I would also discuss sleep issues with your doctor as getting a good night's sleep may help your son focus and concentrate. There are also a number of different medications, some stimulant and some non-stimulant that are on the market today. Your doctor would be able to explain the different choices and help you make a decision as to whether one would be a good one for your son to try.
