Q: How do adults know if the medication is working, I take Concerta 36 in the A.M. and Focalin in p.m.

(Sometimes ,like certain times of the month), I feel like nothing works for me. The concerta makes me feel too quick like I'm always on the move. Any suggestions? I am going to the DR. on Friday, so I will mention this to him too.

Hi Beautychick,

It can actually be somewhat tricky to know whether a med is working optimally. Sometimes the effects are subtle and sometimes they are very evident. If you notice that you're getting more things done, are less distracted, impulsive, or whatever your ADHD symptoms are that are most problematic, then the med is working. However, many with ADHD have a tough time recognizing changes within themselves! Ask yourself if you're getting more things done. Or see if you're more organized. If you're still not sure, ask someone who knows you well, preferably in more than one setting (home/work) and see if they notice any changes in you. Are you calmer at home? Getting more work done at your job?

If the Concerta is making you feel too active, then you do need to discuss this with your doctor on Friday. It could mean that you're on too high a dose or that it's simply not the right med for you. However, some people with inattentive ADHD who are chronically sluggish, often do "perk" up with stimulants. But it should not make you feel driven or too active.

Additionally, for women with ADHD, symptoms often do worsen when there are hormonal changes. In that case, doctors often tweak the meds during that time so that they manage worsening symptoms. Some people report they have to take an additional or higher dose of their medications during those times.

Hope this helps!
Terry
