Q: Why does it seem like the meds aren't working anymore?

My daughter turned 4 in June and started taking medications for ADHD in August (Tenex and Ritalin). For the first couple of months she did great and we were increasing her steadily. But recently she started slipping and the hyperactivity returned. We have switched to Concerta but things don't seem to be improving, it's almost as though she's on nothing. Her doctor has been working closely with us and thought we were seeing the re-bound effect in her but I'm not so sure now. Any suggestions??

Thank you for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice.

However, people react differently to medications and what works for one person may not work for another. It can sometimes be a matter of trial and error to find the right medication and the right dosage.

It is good that you are working closely with your doctor to find the right medication for your daughter. You may want to keep a log of your daughter's behavior each day so you can share this with your doctor. This may better help the doctor understand what symptoms are still present and which ones may be helped.

Please remember, however, medication does not cure ADHD. The most effective treatment combines medication and behavioral strategies.
