Hi umemeu:

There are a number of alternative approaches to treating attention problems and you should consult with a professional about this before using anything on your son.

You can learn more about treating your son by attending CHADD meetings in your area.

You should understand that "herbal medications" are still medications, but they are not controlled by the FDA.  This means that nobody is working to protect you from improper doses, mixed drugs in your bottle or other issues that you may not want your son to experience. Herbal remedies are considered a food by our government, so they only look for poisons or toxic materials vs. the strength of the drug, or even the contents in the bottle.

You should speak with a holistic physician or specialist before trying anything over the counter. Remember that you are trying to change how your son's brain is functioning and should be very careful with this.

A drug is a drug, no matter what you call it. This includes prescription, illegal or unsupervised making of the drugs, such as herbal medications.

An alternative treatment that exists which does not depend on medications is Neurofeedback which teaches your child how to change how is brain functions on his own. It works extremely well with attention problems.

Best of luck,

Dr. Diana Walcutt
