Q: I believe my son is ADHD. How would that be diagnosed?

My son is six years old and the school is finally making steps he has been evaluated in the school, he will be recieveing speach theropy, physical theropy, he will be seeing a threopist in the school.  i would like to know what i would have to do to determine what is wrong with him an what help to seek to find out if he has ADHD?

My son has a bad temper, he is very easily distracted, he should be in 1st grade but he is in kindergarden. He forgets things very quickly, his moter skills are very slow, he walks on his tip toes, he has night tremors, he has a short tention span, load sounds scare him easily ;example: when he flushes the toilet he gets scared and runs out. since he was one years old i started noticing little things and as he gets older i see it more and more, I am happy the school is finally seeing it as well and starting to take the steps needed i just feel it should of been taking seriously from day one and i want to finally get to the bottom of what can be wrong.

Thanks for your question and welcome to ADHDCentral.com.

I am not a medical professional and would not be able to give you medical advice or tell you whether your son has ADHD.

It is good that you are taking steps to get your son the help he needs to be successful in school. You, as his mother, are his best advocate. You know both his strengths and weaknesses and can work with the school to develop the best plan of action to help him.

The best place to start would be at your family doctor. Some family doctors and pediatricians have received training and feel comfortable diagnosing ADHD in children, others may not and may refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist for further evaluation. Either way, starting with your family doctor can rule out any other physical causes for the symptoms you are seeing.

I recently wrote an Action Plan for Parents. This should lead you through the steps to take when you think your child has ADHD.

In addition, there is a Parenting Checklist with links to much information on ADHD and what to expect throughout this process.

I hope this information helps. Please let us know how it is going.

In my own experience the pediatrician gave us an 8 page questionaire to fill out, and also a list of psychiatrists who work with children in our area.  It took a while to get into the psychiatrist's schedule, but was worth the wait. It was helpful to go to the psychiatrists office with the "questionaire" already filled in, I think it saved us an extra visit, and valuable time.  Then after the diagnosis we started with "talking therapy" (The talking therapy gave us as parents different "tools" to use, as well as goals for  him ) and medication.  The medication was a bit trickier, but after starting, tapering off, and starting meds three times, we finally found one that is working well for him.  He is a different kid with the medication on board, or perhaps i should just say he is "His BEST self" with the medication.  Best of luck with getting the right diagnosis, a good psychiatrist, and the right medication (if you decide that medication is the right choice for your child)  My son was also about 6 when he was first diagnosed, and had some (but not all) of the same symptoms.  Good luck.
